Symbols Galore in Europa’s Statue

From a friend of DS

“Symbols are a function of context.  In the context of Europe’s
irresponsible bid to buy time in Greece, May Claerhout’s popular
sculpture “Europe” takes on a new meaning.
(http://www.flickr.com/photos/paucal/5451833632/).  The mythical
Europa, upholding the Euro with all her might, now seems not to be
supported by the mass of people so much as treading on them. It is not
without irony that Europa also features on the Greek €2 coin, sitting
atop Zeus in the shape of a bull.  Symbols galore.”
